Getting There

Lizard Island is Australia's northern-most island beach resort, located 240 kilometres north of Cairns and 27 kilometres off the coast of North Queensland. The island is a National Park covering 1,013 hectares with 24 sandy beaches and a lagoon.  Cairns is the nearest domestic and international airport.

Getting to Cairns: To get to Lizard Island regular flights are available to Cairns from all Australian Capital cities with Qantas and Virgin Blue. Alternatively Queensland Rail offers two Tilt trains and three Sunlander departures from Brisbane to Cairns.

From Cairns International Airport it is a short 60 minute Hinterland flight transfer to Lizard Island. Alternatively; a private charter can be arranged. Please see below for further details.

Hinterland Flights

Hinterland Aviation operates regular scenic transfer flights between Cairns Airport and Lizard Island up to 2 times daily. Private Great Barrier Reef transfer charter flights to Lizard Island are also available upon request.

Transfer duration: approx. 60 min. Check-in: 30 minutes prior to the flight departure at the Hinterland Aviation terminal.

Connecting times: if arriving from a domestic flight to Cairns a minimum of one hour connection between flights is required. When arriving from an international flight a minimum of two hours is required - this includes domestic travel on an international flight number. These connection times are required in either direction.

Hinterland Aviation terminal: a courtesy transfer from the main terminal at Cairns to the Hinterland Aviation terminal is provided by Coral Reef Coaches. Passengers will meet the transfer at the Coral Reef Coaches check-in desk located in the Domestic Terminal. This is offered as a shared transfer for all guests arriving or departing on the same flights to and from Cairns. A private car transfer may be arranged at the time of booking. A charge of $25.00 per person one-way applies.

Note: Lizard Island can organise air transfers to the island for guests, however to ensure the process runs smoothly a minimum of 14 days notice of connecting flights is requested and is ideal.

Guests staying overnight in Cairns, are required to make their own way to the Hinterland Aviation Terminal. Final check-in is 30 minutes prior to departure time.

Luggage restrictions: passengers are restricted to one suitcase and one small carry-on item of hand luggage each. Soft suitcases are preferable. A limit of 32kg total per person applies, this includes check in and carry-on hand luggage (subject to loading restrictions). Luggage storage facilities are available at the Hinterland Terminal.

Group bookings: bookings of 10 or more passengers must charter a flight. Groups of 9 or less passengers may travel on the Hinterland flights.
