The Flinders Ranges is in a class of its own for taking in the sheer size and scale of Australia’s outback offering magical and memorable contact with this ancient land.
An ancient landscape moulded by hundreds of millions of years of geological activity, the Flinders Ranges offers some of Australia’s most spectacular outback scenery. At 60,000 acres, Arkaba is a classic outback sheep station and home to a wondrous variety of bird and wildlife.
Dating from the 1850s, Arkaba Homestead pays homage to the station’s rich pastoral heritage in a style that is both rustically chic and utterly exclusive. With just five rooms, the homestead is an oasis of comfort and style amidst a harsh and rugged landscape where guests enjoy a taste of classic Australian country hospitality.
Activities include bush-walking and photography. Gain an insight to outback Australia’s early settler history or just soaking up the sights and sounds of the bush. Learn about the workings of a sheep station, tackle the foothills of the Elder Range on a mountain bike or take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and the salt pans of Lake Torrens. On guided 4WD drives visit historic towns, enjoy an outback pub lunch and search for wildlife – Red and Grey Kangaroos, Euros, the rare Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby and more.
“If ever there were a property that fulfilled every Australian’s romantic notion of station life it is the hauntingly beautiful Arkaba...” Christine McCabe, The Australian

ARKABA STATION
Sheep Station Activities
Arkaba remains a working sheep station and offers an insight to life on a medium sized outback property and the vagaries that Australia’s climate imposes on farmers. The Arkaba woolshed was built in 1856 and is one of the finest of its kind anywhere in Australia. Shearing at Arkaba is usually in August each year.
